The picturesque town of Interlaken, in the Bernese Oberland area of Switzerland, is a great place to stay during a Swiss hire car holiday.

Interlaken Overview

Its proximity to the mountains means that there are fantastic winter sports opportunities, and the surrounding area has hiking trails, cycling and mountain biking trails. You can also go horse riding, take tours of Interlaken and other local villages, or simply enjoy the spectacular scenery.

Interlaken is famous for its horse-drawn carriages and a ride in one of these is the perfect way to see the town in style. It also has several museums to explore. You can visit the Tin Figure Museum at Interlaken Castle, which includes displays of more than 150 historical scenes, the SBB Historic Foundation Exhibition, which traces the history of the Swiss railway, or the Jungfrau Tourist Museum which features exhibits about the history of tourism in the region.

You can also visit the beautiful St. Beatus Caves, which are about ten minutes? drive from the centre of Interlaken. If you're looking for souvenirs, try the craft shops on the main street, Höheweg.

If you fancy a break from driving, you can take a trip to the Jungfraujoch on the cogwheel railway. Jungfraujoch Station is the highest altitude railway station in Europe and, once you've arrived there, you can enjoy the ice palace, glacier restaurant, Alpine Research exhibition and many other attractions.

The best way to explore the region around Interlaken, however, is by hiring a car. You can use your Interlaken hire car to visit the nearby village of Brienz, where you'll find the Ballenberg Open Air Museum, or to reach the ski resort of Grindelwald. You can also drive to destinations such as Chateau d'Oex, the city of Lugano or even break up your holiday with a few days in the Austrian city of Innsbruck. Getting to Interlaken and Car Hire

The best way to get to Interlaken is to fly into one of Switzerland's international airports, such as Geneva or Zurich. Berne Airport is also an option. You can hire a car from the airport and drive to Interlaken or, if you would prefer to take public transport to Interlaken, you can hire a car in Interlaken itself.
