By-Car Hire Guide To Berne

Berne (or Bern) is the capital of Switzerland and is a great place to use as a base for a hire car holiday.

Berne Overview

Berne was founded in the Middle Ages and the Old Town area of the city is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. You can take a stroll through the narrow streets and see some wonderful historic buildings and fountains. Berne's historic landmarks include the beautiful Late Gothic style Münster, which was constructed between 1421 and 1893. You can climb to the top of the 100m spire for stunning views across the city.

Other significant buildings in Berne include the House of Parliament, the Käfigturm (Prison Tower) and the Zeitglockenturm (Clock Tower).

One of Berne's most popular tourist attractions is the Botanical Gardens, where you can see more than 6,000 species of plants including native Alpine species, and plants from Asia and the USA. If you like flowers, you'll also enjoy the city's Rose Garden, a public park where you can see more than 200 different types of rose together with many other plants.

Culture lovers will also find plenty of museums and galleries to keep them entertained. Physicist Albert Einstein once lived in the city, and you can visit the house in which he lived as well as the Einstein Museum. Other museums in Berne include the Swiss Rifle Museum, the Historical Museum of Bern, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Natural History Museum, the Museum of Psychiatry, the Swiss Alpine Museum and the Salvation Army Museum.

Football fans can visit the Stade de Suisse, the city's sports stadium and a venue for the UEFA Euro 2008 final tournament. Guided tours of the stadium are available on certain days.

There are some excellent shops in Berne, particularly in the Old Town district, and there are plenty of bars, restaurants and clubs to keep you occupied at night.

However, as well as attractions in Berne itself, there are some great places in the surrounding area that you can visit if you hire a car during your stay. You can use your hire car to visit the medieval city of Fribourg, with its beautiful architecture, or to drive to the skiing areas around Champex-Lac or Lenk.

Hiring a car in Berne will also allow you to travel to the UNESCO World Heritage Site at St. Gallen, or even break up your Swiss holiday by crossing the border and spending a few days in the French city of Dijon.
