By-Car Hire Guide To BaselThe Swiss city of Basel is situated on the borders of France and Germany, on the banks of the Rhine, making it an interesting and vibrant city, and a perfect place to use as a base during a hire car holiday. Basel OverviewBasel is known for its cultural attractions and is home to more than forty museums including the Historical Museum, the Swiss Folk Museum and the Doll's House Museum. One of the most popular museums in Basel is the Museum of Fine Arts, which includes works by Hans Holbein the Elder, Hans Holbein the Younger, Rubens, Rembrandt, Monet, Van Gogh and Picasso. You can also visit Basel Münster, which was originally constructed during the 13th century and rebuilt after it was damaged by an earthquake in the 14th century. The cathedral contains a number of interesting tombs including the tomb of famous humanist scholar Erasmus and the tomb of Queen Anna, Rudolf of Hapsburg's wife. You can take a stroll around Basel's historic Old Town, admire some of the city's beautiful fountains or take a relaxing walk through the tranquil Merian Park. Children will enjoy Basel Zoo, one of Switzerland's most popular tourist attractions, which is home to many different types of animals, birds and reptiles including snow leopards, cheetahs, monkeys, pelicans and meerkats. Basel has some wonderful restaurants where you can enjoy food influenced by the culinary traditions of France and Germany, as well as traditional Swiss cuisine, and there are plenty of bars and clubs to try as well. Shopaholics are also well catered for in Basel, so you shouldn't have a problem finding souvenirs of your trip. To truly explore the surrounding area, however, it's a good idea to hire a car during your holiday in Basel. You can use your Basel hire car to reach nearby places such as Baden or Montreux, or drive to destinations such as the ski resort of Davos for a few days stay. If you hire a car in Basel, you can also break up your holiday by crossing the border into Italy to visit the fashionable city of Milan.
