Car Hire in Switzerland - Hints and Tips

Here are some hints and tips on driving a hire car in Switzerland:

Drive on the right-hand side of the road.
The speed limit for driving in built-up areas is 30km/h and the speed limit in towns is 50km/h. The maximum speed at which you can drive on a main road is 80km/h and the speed-limit for motorway driving is 120km/h.
The driver and all passengers must wear seatbelts.
Make sure that you take out adequate car insurance.
Keep all your car hire documents, insurance papers, license and photo ID with you when you are driving.
Always make sure that your car is equipped with a warning triangle. It is illegal to travel without one.
Dipped headlights must be on for daytime travel.
Stick to all speed limits and don't break the road laws as you could be subject to an on-the-spot fine if you're caught.
Drivers must be aged 18 or over.
Drink-driving laws are strict in Switzerland. If you are going to be drinking, don't drive your hire car. Take a taxi or use public transport.
If you are going to be driving on a motorway, you'll need to buy and display a motorway vignette. You can buy one from the Swiss Centre in the UK, once you have arrived in Switzerland, or online.
