  • Drive on the right-hand side of the road.
  • The speed limit for driving in built-up areas is 30km/h and the speed limit in towns is 50km/h. The maximum speed at which you can drive on a main road is 80km/h and the speed-limit for motorway driving is 120km/h.
  • The driver and all passengers must wear seatbelts.
  • Make sure that you take out adequate car insurance.

  • Always make sure that your car is equipped with a warning triangle. It is illegal to travel without one.
  • Dipped headlights must be on for daytime travel.
  • Stick to all speed limits and don't break the road laws as you could be subject to an on-the-spot fine if you're caught.
  • Drivers must be aged 18 or over.
  • Drink-driving laws are strict in Switzerland. If you are going to be drinking, don't drive your hire car. Take a taxi or use public transport.
