By-Car Hire Guide To Valencia

Valencia is situated in the centre of the Spanish Mediterranean coast, overlooking the Gulf of Valencia. Behind the city is a range of mountains and the Balearic Islands are off the coast of Valencia.

Valencia is also situated about 500km away from the two major Spanish cities of Madrid and Barcelona.

Until the 1990s, Valencia was primarily an industrial city but since then it has become increasingly popular with tourists due to both its cultural past and recent investment into the city, including the development of the City of Arts and Sciences leisure complex. Valencia was also chosen to host the 2007 America's Cup, leading to a radical redevelopment of the port area, and Valencia will be hosting a Formula One Grand Prix on its streets from 2008.

There are many attractions in Valencia for you to check out, from the beautiful buildings of the old quarter to the Gulliver Children's Park. The Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia and L'Hemisfèric planetarium on the old riverbed showcase the latest in cutting edge architecture with their futuristic designs.

Valencia offers good shopping opportunities with a wide range of national and international department stores in the city centre, plus big name fashion houses and local designer outlets. Away from the department stores, you'll find that Valencia has a long tradition in crafts, particularly in the design and production of ceramics and silk art. For a real local experience, visit the Plaza Redonda's Sunday morning flea market, which sells everything from books to animals.

However, although there is plenty to do in Valencia, to experience the sights and sounds of the area fully, you will need to hire a car. Hiring a car in Valencia will allow you to visit the Las Arenas beaches on the coast or travel inland to see charming towns and villages such as Cuenca.

If you hire a car in Valencia you could also break up your holiday by spending a weekend in Barcelona or Madrid.
