By-Car Hire Guide To Barcelona

The Spanish city of Barcelona is one of Europe's most popular tourist destinations, playing host to around five million visitors a year. The city boasts a heady mix of cutting edge music, architecture, food and art.

Over the last two decades, the city has undergone a huge transformation, partly due to the hosting of the Summer Olympics in 1992 and the recent Forum 2004 developments.

These initiatives have seen new facilities and recreational parkland spring up on the sites of old high-rise offices and derelict buildings, and the port area now has an array of smart restaurants, clubs and bars as well as the famous Hotel des Arts, making Barcelona a fascinating combination of old and new, both in look and attitude.

The city has some great attractions, but the name of Gaudi is synonymous with that of Barcelona. The must-see place in Barcelona is Gaudi's unfinished La Sagrada Familia Cathedral. This epic cathedral is still being built, with three facades representing the birth, the passion and death, and the glorification of Christ and each facade has 4 large towers symbolising the twelve disciples which encircle the central spire, which symbolises Christ.

Other Gaudi attractions worth visiting are the garden park of Parc Güell, the Colonia Güell church and La Pedrera ,also know as Mila Mansion.

Barcelona has over 50 museums including The Picasso Museum, containing some of the artist's most well known paintings and the Joan Miro Foundation, a museum dedicated to the works of the Surrealist artist, sculptor and ceramist.

There is so much to explore in the many small streets and squares where you will find the heritage of Barcelona dating back to medieval times through to the boulevard of La Rambla (or Les Rambles), which takes you from the heart of the city to the main port area.

The city is a haven for shoppers with stores selling designer clothes and jewellery from international brands. You can search for antiques and second-hand clothes in Els Encants Vells ('Old Charms') flea market. If you're more of a night animal, you can hang out at some of the city centre bars and clubs such as Bikini or Jamboree.

However, to experience the sights and sounds of the Barcelona area fully, you'll need to hire a car. Renting a car will allow you to visit the beaches of Sitges, the medieval city of Girona or the holy mountain of Montserrat, the site of the Benedictine abbey of Santa Maria de Montserrat.

With a hire car you could also break up your holiday by spending a weekend skiing in the Pyrenees or even crossing the border to Andorra.

Getting to Barcelona and Barcelona Car Hire

Barcelona's airport is El Prat Airport about 12km (7.5 miles) south west of the city centre and you can hire a car from there. The airport is fairly busy and receives direct flights from many locations in Europe and North America.

You can also arrive by international train into Barcelona, where you can hire a car once you are in the city centre.
