You can drive to Welkom from Johannesburg in just under 3 hours in your hire car.

Welkom was founded after gold was discovered on St. Helena Farm in 1946, and officially became a town in 1948. Now a city, Welkom is known for the fact that it is well-planned, and features some excellent parks and green spaces.

You can learn about Welkom's history with a tour to the St. Helena Gold Mine, which features the deepest wine cellar in the world, or one of the other gold mines in the area. You can also visit the Gold Museum in the city's Public Library to learn more about how gold is mined. Welkom's main landmark is its 60m tall Clock Tower, but there are also many monuments in the city, including the WWII Monument and the Moth Monument.

For a spot of gambling, you can head off to the Casino in the Samlan Plazza or spend a day at the races at Phakisa Raceway. You can also relax in one of the city's lovely parks, which include Peter Pan Park and Central Park, or go shopping in the city centre. Other attractions in and around Welkom include the Theronia Pan bird sanctuary and the Flamingo Pan.

Directions: To get to Welkom from Johannesburg by car, take the N1 from Johannesburg to Kroonstad. Take a right turn to get onto the R34 and then follow this road to Welkom.
