By-Car Hire Guide To Cape Town

Cape Town, the oldest city in South Africa, is a sunshine paradise and the perfect place to use as a base for a hire car holiday.

Cape Town Overview

There are some fantastic attractions in and around Cape Town. You won't be able to miss Cape Town's main landmark, Table Mountain, which overlooks the city. If you hire a car in Cape Town, you can drive to Table Mountain, and take the ten minute cable car ride to the summit for stunning views.

Another of Cape Town's most famous attractions is the Robben Island Museum. Robben Island, just off the coast of Cape Town, was the home of the maximum security prison in which Nelson Mandela was incarcerated. You can take a boat to the island, which is now a World Heritage Site, take a guided tour of the prison with an ex-prisoner to learn about its history, and explore the museum's interactive exhibits.

Cape Town is also a great destination for anyone who loves to shop. The V & A Waterfront will provide you with hours of retail therapy, as it's packed with more than 400 stores. There are also many places to eat and drink, all in a fascinating and lively setting.

However, in order to make the most out of your holiday in Cape Town, you should hire a car. Hiring a car will enable you to visit some of the attractions just outside of Cape Town, such as the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden and the Boulders Beach Penguin Colony, or see the world's only Whale Crier in the village of Hermanus.

You can also use your Cape Town hire car to explore the wine-producing areas around the city. You could follow the Worcester Wine Route in the Breede River Valley, or explore Paarl's Wine Valley.

If you hire a car in Cape Town, you can also drive to attractions slightly further away, and break up your holiday by spending a day or two in the historic village of Matjiesfontein or the "ostrich capital of the world", Oudtshoorn, from which you can take a trip to the beautiful Cango Caves.
