By-Car Hire Guide To Naples

Naples is a fantastic mix of excitement, beauty and splendid disarray. Unofficially regarded as the capital of Southern Italy, it's an ideal base from which to explore the region if you hire a car.

Naples Overview

Situated under Europe's largest active volcano, Mount Vesuvius, Naples is packed with attractions and famous landmarks, with narrow 13th and 14th century streets branching off the main street of Spaccanapoli. With shops offering the best in Italian design, relaxed bars and cafes, and artisan workshops, Naples offers an unconventional mix of cultures, but still manages to exude that famously sleek Italian style.

Naples has some some stunning piazzas, including the huge Piazza Plebiscito where the magnificent San Francesco di Paola Church, the Old Royal Palace and the glass dome of the Galleria Umberto I arcade rise up from the semi circle. There are also some great museums in the city including the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, where you can see artefacts taken from the sites at Pompeii and Herculaneum, and the Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte, housed in the Palazzo Reale di Capodimonte, where you can see works by Botticelli, Lippi, Titian, Caravaggio and El Greco.

A must for any visit to Naples is to sample a Neapolitan pizza (known locally as the "marinara"). Reputedly the birthplace of the Italian pizza, Naples has many charming restaurants that offer great food at reasonable prices.

Although Naples has a lot to offer, there are also many other must-see attractions in the area and to visit these you'll need to hire a car. If you hire a car in Naples, you can visit the ruins at Pompeii and Herculaneum, drive along the beautiful Amalfi Coast road or visit the historic port of Bari.

You can also break up your holiday by spending a few days in another location, such as the picturesque town of Alberobello, and use your Naples hire car to explore the area.
