By-Car Hire Guide To Bologna

Bologna is a beautiful city full of atmospheric buildings, beautiful churches and interesting museums.

Bologna Overview

Bologna's attractions include:

  • the Museo di Geologica de Paleontologia (Museum of Geology and Palaeontology) which holds over 1 million palaeontology exhibits.
  • the Medieval Museum, which is housed in the 15th century Palazzo Ghisilardi-Fava, and includes sculptures, ivories, bronzes and manuscripts from the Middle Ages.
  • the Santuario della Madonna di San Luca, on the Colle della Guardia, just outside the main city. You can reach this beautiful basilica by walking along the 3.6km portico which includes 666 arches and 15 chapels, and you can see some wonderful views of Bologna from the hilltop.
  • the Museo Civico Archeologico (Archaeological Museum), which includes one of Europe's largest ancient Egyptian collections.
  • the Pinacoteca Nazionale de Bologna (National Picture Gallery), which houses works by Giotto, Raphael and Reni.
  • the Grigioverde Museum which immerses visitors in World War II with its multimedia exhibits.
  • Le Due Torri (Two Towers) in the university quarter of Bologna, two of the city's most well-known landmarks. The 49m high Torre Garisenda was originally taller, but the top section was demolished in the 14th century as the tower was leaning dangerously. It isn't open to the public, but you can climb the steps to the top of the nearby Torre degli Asinelli for stunning views across the city.
  • the colourful Botanical Gardens at Via Irnerio, which date back to the 16th century and include more than 5,000 species of plants.

Bologna has a great range of shops, and the food is wonderful. There are many places to choose from when it comes to dining out. You can also drink and dance the night away - try Via Zamboni and Via Pratello for a good time.

Although Bologna itself has plenty to offer, if you want to explore the region properly you'll need to hire a car. If you hire a car in Bologna, you can visit nearby cities like Ravenna, Florence or Perugia. You can also use your Bologna hire car to break up your holiday by visiting the Vatican City or Rome for a few days.

Hiring a car in Bologna will give you the freedom to explore the regions of Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany in comfort and at your own pace.
