Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat is by-car.co.uk?By-car.co.uk is a new car hire booking engine which, along with the german language equivalent (im-mietauto.de) offers you the ability to search for car hire deals at over 7500 rental locations worldwide. What are the core requirements for a rental?A valid driver's licence, issued from your country of residence and held for at least one year, must be presented at time of rental. If your licence is not in English, an International Driver's Permit may be required. The minimum rental age is 25 years old on most rentals. Do I need a credit card?Yes, all companies insist that principal and additional drivers possess a valid credit card at the time of signing the rental agreement. Is your site safe?Yes, our site uses the security protocol SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) to secure the information you send and receive. When sites use a security protocol, information that you provide, such as your name or credit-card number, is encrypted so that it can't be viewed by other people. All personal information you send and receive is encrypted. Am I covered?It is your responsibility to ensure that you have adequate insurance protection for the vehicle, you, your passengers and third party liability. For most destinations, our rates include insurance, for other insurances are offered as an option. Insurances are generally referred to as CDW (Collision Damage Waiver), in others it is known as LDW (Loss Damage Waiver) and LIS (Liability Insurance Supplement). These policies may require an excess payment in case of a claim which may vary according to the renting location, age of driver and type of vehicle being rented. In some cases, you may pay a fee up front to limit excess payment liability. If I rent a 4x4, can I drive anywhere?All vehicles, including 4-wheel drives, are to be operated only on regularly maintained roads. Off-road use is forbidden. What are Optional Extras?Optional Extras include child seats, additional drivers, satellite-navigation units, fuel purchase options, insurances (incl. excess waivers), ski racks and chains etc. These all carry a fee. When do I pay for additional extras?Some optional extras may be purchased in advance, others are paid for locally at the counter. What if I have a problem with the car?In many countries, the rental supplier will provide Emergency Roadside Assistance 365 days a year. Details will be supplied at time of rental. Do I have to return to the same location?No. In most cases suppliers allow you to pick up at one location and drop off at another within the same country. Where this is allowed, a one-way fee may be charged. What if I'm late for my pick-up/return times?If you are delayed we advise you to contact your renting location. If you have supplied a flight number and your plane is delayed, most major companies will hold your car for you. After a period of time without notice, the rental company may deem non-appearance as a 'no-show' and terminate the booking. When returning, some companies will offer a limited grace period beyond the agreed return time after which time another days rental will be charged. What if I have a query?
