By-Car Hire Guide To Vienna

Vienna, Austria's capital, offers a huge wealth of attractions and is a great place to use as a base for an Austrian car hire holiday.

Vienna is known as a city of culture and has been home to great composers such as Mozart and Beethoven. The world-famous Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra has its home at the Wiener Musikverein, and opera lovers will enjoy the Vienna Opera House and the Volksoper, which specialises in Viennese operetta.

Vienna also has many museums and art galleries. The Museumsquartier area has several museums, such as the Leopold Museum and the MUMOK (Museum of Modern Art). Other museums include the Sisi Museum, dedicated to the Empress Elisabeth, and the Hofburg, where you'll find the Hapsburgs' imperial jewels.

Vienna's architecture exhibits a harmonious blend of many styles. Notable buildings include the 17th century Schönbrunn Palace, originally home to the Hapsburg monarchs and now one of Austria's major tourist attractions, and the two Rococo Belvedere Palaces in the Belvedere grounds near the city centre. You can also visit the Ringstraße, a boulevard with many impressive buildings, including the Burgtheater, Parliament and the Rathaus (town hall). An unusual modern building is the unique Hundertwasserhaus, a residential building built in the 1980s, which has a grass-covered roof, trees growing inside, and a multi-colour façade.

There are plenty of ways to relax in Vienna too. Young and old alike will enjoy the Prater adventure park, which offers over 250 attractions, including the Riesenrad giant Ferris wheel. This provides fantastic views over the city, as does the Danube Tower, which also has two excellent restaurants.

The city is also famous as the home of the Wiener Hofreitschule (Spanish Riding School), where you can see displays of classical dressage performed by Lipizzaner horses. You'll need to book your tickets well in advance of your trip, and the school is closed during July and August.

Vienna is a great destination for sports fans too: football fans can watch the games at the Ernst Happel Stadium, and Vienna is unusual among cities in that it has its own ski area, so you can enjoy some skiing without going to the Alps!

Vienna has a lot to offer, but to get the most out of your holiday, you should hire a car. If you hire a car, you can set your own schedule, and explore the city and surrounding areas at your own pace.

If you hire a car in Vienna, you can visit the nearby Lainzer Tiergarten wildlife reserve, the cities of Linz and Graz, or the ski resorts of Semmering and Lackenhof am Ötscher. You can also break up your holiday by spending a few nights in another destination, such as the famous resorts of Kitzbühel or Bad Gastein.
