By-Car Hire Guide To SalzburgSalzburg is Austria's fourth-largest city. It is rich in cultural attractions and, is especially famous as the birthplace of Mozart. It is also close to a large number of skiing resorts, making it an excellent base for a winter holiday. Salzburg's cultural attractions include many museums, such as the Cathedral Museum, Baroque Museum, Toy Museum and the Salzburg Museum. The city's art galleries include the Residenz Gallery, the Mönchsberg Museum of Modern Art, and the Rupertinum Museum of Modern Art. Music lovers have many concerts to choose from; Mozart is always a favourite, and the annual summer Salzburg Festival includes five weeks of music and drama. You can also visit Mozart's house and birthplace (now a museum), as well as the Michael Haydn Museum. Salzburg's Old Town has beautiful historic architecture, and one building of note is the Hohensalzburg Fortress, built in 1077, which is Europe's largest completely preserved medieval fortress. Other historic buildings in the city include Salzburg Cathedral, St. Peter's Abbey, Schloss Hellbrunn, Mirabell Palace, and the beautiful Rococo Leopoldskron Palace, which was built in the 18th century and used as the setting for some scenes in "The Sound of Music". Salzburg's Advent season celebrations make a winter visit especially enjoyable; the city is beautifully decorated, and you can enjoy some retail therapy in the 800+ shops and at the weekly farmer's market. The Getreidegasse, in the Old Town, is Salzburg's main shopping area. Football fans can enjoy the games at the Salzburg/Wals-Siezenheim stadium on the city's outskirts, and winter sports enthusiasts will find that Salzburg provides easy access to the resorts that make up the Salzburg Sportwelt Ski Region, which is part of the Ski Amadé, Austria's largest linked ski area.
