By-Car Hire Guide To Innsbruck

Innsbruck is the capital of Austria's Tirol region, and offers many winter sports opportunities. The city also has some great cultural attractions and excellent shops.

The medieval Old Town has architecture dating from the 14th century onwards. The Golden Roof (Goldenes Dachl) was built in 1500 and is decorated with more than 2,600 gilded copper tiles. Nearby is the 15th century City Tower (Stadtturm), where visitors can climb to the top for excellent views over the city and surrounding mountains.

Other historic buildings in Innsbruck include the 15th century Imperial Palace, the 16th century Ambras Castle, the Baroque St. Jacob's Castle and the Court Church with Silver Chapel, which was built by Ferdinand I and contains the opulent Cenotaph of Emperor Maximilian I, Innsbruck's largest imperial monument.

There are many shops, bars and restaurants to enjoy on Innsbruck's main street, Maria-Theresien Straße. The Leopoldstraße, Herzog-Friedrich-Straße and the Rathaus Galerien arcade also offer great shopping opportunities, as do Innsbruck's excellent markets.

For a break from the city bustle, visit Innsbruck's two large lakes, Lagersee and Baggersee, or take a relaxing stroll around the beautiful Hofgarten, a large park.

Innsbruck's ideal Alpine location makes it a world-famous winter sports centre, and the city has hosted the Olympics twice. The skiing region around Innsbruck is known as Olympia SkiWorld Innsbruck, and includes a number of picturesque villages, the Stubai Glacier, nine skiing areas, over 285km of pistes, and 80 mountain railways and ski lifts. Snowboarding, tobogganing and other sports are also available, and you can travel easily between the villages if you hire a car.

There are also plenty of activities available in the Innsbruck area during the summer. There are many different walking and hiking trails to explore, and you can also cycle, mountain-bike, horse ride, swim, climb or play tennis.

Football fans can also visit Innsbruck's Stadion Tivoli, home of FC Wacker Tirol, and a venue for the UEFA Euro 2008 Final Tournament.

There is a lot to do in Innsbruck, but you can get the most out of your holiday by hiring a car. With a hire car you can set your own schedule, and are free to explore the city and surrounding areas fully.

If you hire a car in Innsbruck, you can explore the nearby Sellrain Valley or visit the ski resorts of Imst, Lech or Sölden. You could also break up your holiday by spending a few nights in another destination, such as Bregenz or the beautiful Carinthian town of Villach.
